These are ancient customs and traditions. For most, I do not have a why or explanation.
1. Keep your hat ON when entering a ger, lift as a sign of greeting.
2. Receive things with both hands or at least your right. Make sure your sleeves are rolled down.
3. If you accept with your right hand, use your left to support your right hand at the wrist or elbow.
4. Remove gloves when shaking someone’s hand.
5. When entering a ger, move in a clockwise direction.
6. Take a sip or nibble of anything that is offered.
7. Pick up things with an open hand, with your palm facing upwards.
8. Sit with your feet underneath you or cross-legged.
9. Gently shake the hand if you accidentally kicked someones feet.
10. Leave a small gift, other than money, for your hosts.
Most of these are from the days of Mongolian conquest are intended to show that you mean no harm. Others are probably religious in nature.
