Culture Corner - Don’t

9/30/17

When I say ger, it also includes houses, apartments, etc.

1. Don’t let a post, fence, etc. come between you and the person you are walking with.
2. Don’t whistle inside a ger.
3. Don’t let your feet point in the direction of the ger altar.
4. Don't let people walk over your outstretched legs.
5. Don’t step on the threshold of a ger when you walk over it.
6. Don’t lean against a support column, the furniture or the wall of the ger.
7. Don’t stamp out a fire, put water on it or garbage in it.
8. Don’t touch another person’s hat.
9. Don’t point a knife in anyone’s direction.
10. Don’t pass anything using just two fingers.
11. Don’t wave your sleeve (this is a sign of protest)
12. Don’t extend the little finger (this is a sign of disrespect) Altah taught us this one 😆
Let it be known I have done most of these more than once. Especially passing things with two fingers. During a lesson about exchange money, our teacher Altah would flick my hand every time I tried to pass money with my fingers. I always whistle wherever I am, I don’t think I have ever seen a Mongolian whistle.
